Coolness Predicts Success of Online Poker Players
Coolness increases a person's chance of winning online poker games, according to a new study.
Unlike most gambling games, poker isn't just about chance as it involves the ability to regulate emotions and make quality decisions based on skill and knowledge.
After observing emotionality, experience level and success among online poker players, researchers found that emotional stability is both a predictive and enabling factor in success in poker. Further revealed that experienced and successful poker players were significantly more likely to exhibit emotional stability.
Other findings revealed that poker players who prefer to play in person rather than online are more likely to be extroverted and experimental.
"Previous studies have shown that online poker players tend to be introverted individuals and that those who perform better at poker are less neurotic," Editor-in-Chief Brenda K. Wiederhold, PhD, MBA, BCB, BCN, Interactive Media Institute, San Diego, California, said in a news release. "This study, however, takes research a step further by comparing online and offline players."
The findings were published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking.
