The number of coronavirus cases in Texas is increasing at a rapid rate, setting an all-time high for hospitalization records in a week. The Lone Star State had 2,287 Coranavirus patients for Sunday, an increase of 45 cases from Saturday's 2,242 records.

These data were disclosed by Texas health authorities with Sunday's numbers as the sixth new high for admissions in all Texas hospitals. As of the moment, the state has almost 80,000 coronavirus cases, more than 25,000 active cases, and almost 2,000 deaths.

The Key Background

Last April 30, Texas lifted its coronavirus restrictions, which allowed the cancellation of the stay-at-home order across the whole state, making it one of the very first states to loosen this lockdown order.

On May 1, businesses started reopening through key phases, with certain safety precautions. Limited capacity settings of only 25 percent were allowed in movie theaters, restaurants, retails stores, and other establishments.

Texas isn't the only one who is registering a sharp rise in Coronavirus cases during the past week. There are now over a dozen states with a spike in coronavirus cases, including Florida and South Carolina.

As a result, experts have questioned the maturity of the situation upon the resumption of activities. This is taking into account the past weeks that included some limited Memorial Day gatherings as well as the high-density George Floyd-related protests.

The Rise in Texas

Coronavirus cases in Texas have been trending upward since late May with an increase of 51.35 percent of admissions. It was only on May 5 that the state registered an influx of 1,888 patients.

"We are indeed at a very delicate equilibrium in the sense that it can tilt in the worse direction quickly if we are not cautious enough. But we are not there yet," UNT associate professor Rajesh Nandy expounded on the same article.

No Stopping Despite the Growing Numbers

However, despite the wrong increase in cases, it seems that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is showing no signs of halting the resumption Phase III of the planned reopening. These have included the following:

  • All restaurants are now given a 75 percent sitting capacity.
  • The counties with more than 1,000 confirmed cases are allowed to have a 50 percent capacity opening for their carnivals and parks.
  • Fourth of July celebrations should be monitored by local officials and public health officials. Outdoor gatherings are allowed as long as it follows the special provisions indicated.

The governor has already addressed in the past that these rising coronavirus cases are part of the percentage of tests that are coming back positive.
