Memorial Day 2020 is celebrated under the long shadow of the coronavirus pandemic.

The federal holiday is observed every last Monday of May in observance of all the uniformed men and women who died while serving in the military. Be that as it may, the government has taken anticipatory actions to be safe than sorry. According to a report, all the things that we look forward to every year will not happen this year. The pandemic forced the cancellation for parades, rifle volleys, flags lining the avenues, and other symbolic U.S. military rites.

An Alternative Form of Celebrating Memorial Day

Under those circumstances, a virtual concert will happen this Monday, which will be spearheaded by television personality Kathie Lee Gifford. She will be joined online by singer-songwriter Tori Kelly along with LL Cool J, Mario Lopez, Acapop! KIDS, Lincoln Way Marching Band, and Rob Lowe.

If you want to burn some calories during this holiday, you can also participate in a virtual race. How will this work? Well, the online community ACTIVE.com will be hosting some scheduled races in which you can find out all about here. Like an actual race, you can choose to run a 5K, 10K, or a half-marathon.

Another way that we can pay our respects to the veterans is through a virtual commemoration.

"Memorial Day is a time we normally gather at the memorials to lay a wreath in honor of the fallen, remember their heroic deeds, and draw inspiration from their sacrifice. While we may not be able to gather together in the manner in which we are accustomed, we will still ensure those who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of our country are appropriately honored and remembered on Memorial Day." Jeff Reinbold, superintendent of National Mall and Memorial Parks, made it clear on their website.

However, despite the pandemic warnings and the restrictions in different states, many expressed how tired they were of staying at home, so they went out on Memorial Day weekend. People gathered at their favorite beaches without practicing social distancing and wearing face masks.

There were even footages posted on social media that showcased a large number of people consuming drinks at a poolside bar. Some say that this is their way of getting some fresh air, while some argue that they are practicing social distancing anyway. It seems like people cannot be stopped for this special occasion.

The coronavirus death toll in the U.S. has now surged towards 100,000 before the celebration of Memorial Day. The report also mentioned that the Whitehouse will start restricting travel bans from Brazil as its cases have now almost reached 35000. However, these restrictions will not affect the "flow of commerce between the United States and Brazil."
