Baby Doll Recalled For Causing Burns
More than 174,000 electronic baby dolls are being recalled after consumers reported that the doll could overheat, potentially burning the children that play with them.
The Unites States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported Tuesday that an electronic baby doll produced by Tak Ngau Electronic Toys Co. of China has an electric circuit board in its chest that can overheat given the right circumstances, potentially burning anyone handling it.
According to the CPSC report, the product known as "My Sweet Love / My Sweet Baby Cuddle Care Baby Doll" has been sold exclusively in Wal-Mart stores for the past two years. However, Wal-Mart recently began to receive reports of 12 separate incidents with the doll, including two children burning experiencing burns.
In light of these reports, Wal-Mart is recalling all 174,000 dolls made from August 2012 through March 2014. The CPSC has also sought to warn consumers about the products, urging dolls labeled by the code UPC 6-0476-16800-5 be returned to Wal-Mart for a full refund.
The electronic 16-inch doll was designed to simulate the symptoms of getting sick, crying and coughing when its cheeks turn red. Using a plastic medical kit packaged with the doll, children could "treat" their "patient" causing the symptoms to stop. However, the circuit board that allows this doll to function has shown that it can potentially overheat.
The COSC has deemed this product hazardous to consumer health and has assisted Wal-Mart with the voluntary recall of more than 174,000 dolls. The COSC conducts this recall in conjunction with Health Canada officials, who have recalled over 4400 of the products sold in Canada.
A U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report about the recall was released on March 25.
