Daily Intake of Almonds a Cost-Effective Scheme To Prevent Cardiovascular Disease, According To Study

The World Health Organization said cardiovascular disease or CVD is the leading cause of death across the world. It is also a costly condition to treat and can lead to a major economic burden on the patient and his family.

Indeed, in most parts of the world, the WHO also said, CVD has turned out to be a serious cause of worry, "owing to its accelerated buildup, early age of onset in the population, and the high rate of fatality cases."

Several factors that have added to the increase of cases of CVD worldwide include the constant change in lifestyle, lack of physical activity or exercise, lack of balanced diet, and high consumption of saturated and, or, trans fats among the population.

Essentially, previous multiple studies have also presented that eating almonds regularly may help in the reduction of LDL or low-density lipoprotein, or bad cholesterol levels, an identified risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Almonds for Reduced Healthcare Cost

A recent Tufts University study found that eating about 42.5 grams of almond nuts every day, compared to not eating at all, may contribute to the reduction of healthcare costs linked to CVD among the consumers in the United States.

The objective of this research which the Almond Board of California funded was to approximate the cost-efficiency of consuming almonds in the prevention of coronary heart disease through changes in bad cholesterol levels in the US populace through short-term base case investigation and decade-long risk prevention.

The study authors developed a model to analyze the relationship between consuming 42.5 grams of almonds each day against non-consumption of the nuts.

As specified in the research, parameters of the disease included the possibilities of rising levels of bad cholesterol, developing acute MI or myocardial infarction, or heart attack, MI-related operations, and death because of the illness.

Also, a part of the parameters are surgeries and the cost of the disease itself, and procedures in the American population in 2012.

The Link Between Eating Almonds and Heart Health

Discussing the research, Max Healthcare's Ritika Samaddar said, the study is establishing a very favorable link between eating almonds, heart health, and a "derived cost-benefit," each of which is appropriate for a particular country like the US, for one, where CVD occurrences are rising each day.

While the almonds' health benefits have been evaluated by many other studies before, this new study also emphasizes a long-term cost advantage of consuming almonds which is quite extraordinary.

Therefore, Samaddar said, "Make sure to include almonds in your diet" to lead a lifestyle that's healthier and more cost-effective.

When the time prospective was extended to 10 years, research findings were similar in terms of pattern. Specifically, the said study cost non-almond eaters more than $2500 to prevent CVD compared to an amount of only more than $1800 for almond eaters, or a $760-savings.

A Cost-Efficient Scheme

According to their analyses, study authors concluded that consumption of 42.5 grams of almonds every day is a cost-efficient scheme for the prevention of cardiovascular disease in the short term and probably, up to a decade.

Recognizing the findings in the study, Pilates Expert and Diet & Nutrition Consultant Madhuri Ruia said, it is interesting to take note of the long-term viability of this study, particularly in a country where cardiovascular disease is among the leading causes of death.

Choosing healthier snacks like almonds in a small yet effective investment that guarantees to pay off sooner or later, specifically for people at risk of developing CVD.
